5 Red Flags To Watch Out For When Starting a Relationship

Everyone absolutely adores that feeling when you first meet somebody new and start a new relationship. However, this overwhelming feeling of happiness and bliss can sometimes lead people to not see/overlook things they should have noticed in the form of red flags. These red flags are things that are usually a good indication that the relationship may not be as great as you think it is during this honeymoon period. Of course, there are different red flags for different people, but these three red flags are fairly universal to almost everyone.

1. Being Controlling

If someone wants to control what you can do, who you can see and wants constant updates on where you are as soon as you start dating, which can be a problem. Nobody wants to feel like they are “reporting” to someone, especially a brand new boyfriend or girlfriend. Even when two people are dating, they are still ultimately individuals and should have their own lives and interests outside the relationship.

2. Ego

Normally you can tell if someone has an inflated or huge ego right off the hop, but sometimes you they can keep this hidden until the relationship begins. While being confident is good, having an inflated ego can be a real problem in relationships. This can lead to arguments, fights, and leads to one person often being a one-upper. If people can manage their ego and not make themselves the focal point of everything, that’s fine, but if they need to always be the center of attention and be “right”, the relationship is destined to be sub-par.

3. Thinking You Can “Change Them”

You hear about these types of relationships all the time. One person sees potential in a person, but says the have to “change them”. While this may work for a short period of time, it is hardly ever a good idea to agree to get into a relationship with someone while also having the goal in mind to change them. People don’t change easily and if it does happen, it won’t be quickly. It is best to find someone who makes you happy now, not one you have to work on to make them be okay for you.

4. Unnecessary Rudeness or Gossiping

Everyone can be perfect for the first little while in a relationship, but eventually, true colors will emerge. If you are with someone who is rude for no reason or does nothing but gossip it can be extremely draining for you and on the relationship. Plus, it can be tough to really trust someone if you hear them gossip and be two faced to people behind their back.

5. Too Invested Too Quick

Love and a full investment is basically the goal of every relationship, but if you get too invested in the relationship too quick, it can really turn off the other person. Love and growing in the relationship is a process and can’t happen overnight. If one person is much more invested and further along in the process than the other, it can put unnecessary strain on the relationship and can doom it before it ever really got going.
